Franschhoek Residence
This residence is nestled on the slopes of the mountains South of Franschhoek, overlooking the Hottentots-Holland Mountain Area.
This contemporary Cape Dutch homestead houses 5 bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathrooms, a large living and dining areas, a gym, cellar, office, 3x garages, ample parking, luscious gardens, rim-flow pool and other amenities. Fynbos is reinstated around the house forming part of the natural landscape and to minimise the building's invasive footprint in the natural setting.
The slope of the site is handles with a typical cut and fill method to minimise need to import filling or carting excess away.
House Uys - Mariental
This old farmhouse is rejuvenated and altered into a four bedroom, 2 bathroom family home. A large stoep covers most of the facades to keep the harsh Namibian sun off walls and windows ensuring a cool home during the hot summer months.
Senegal Secondary School - Djilakh
Djilakh is a small village in the Thiès region of Senegal with a community of over 4000 residents. The brief was to design a sustainable secondary school to complement the primary school and to encourage students to further their education. The design incorporates elements like wind towers, water storage tanks, and earth construction to endorse a sustainable school for 160 students.
The brief required 4 classrooms, a multifunctional hall, a room for the director, a staff room and spaces for agriculture and livestock.
The design also features an amphitheatre overlooking existing trees which had become the playground with a sportsfield and animal pen beyond it.
Open spaces around classrooms were earmarked for planting crops.
Thatch roofs over stoep areas keep direct sunlight off classroom walls while well ventilated and insulated ceiling voids provide for climate control inside classrooms.
Much consideration was given to sustainability, buildability and cost-effective design as unskilled labourers would be used for bulk of the work with limited financial means.
A Dream Workplace
Nestled in the dunes near Walvis Bay this container architecture inspired workplace has splendid views of the Namib desert and the Atlantic ocean while being serene and isolated from the every day hustle and bustle of a town or city.
